COMMON ROLE-PLAY TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS

Post by MissAdventure on Thu Mar 20, 2008 3:33 pm

TAG: Used to bring attention to a specific character or group of characters that you wish to interact with and play out a scene or plot point. When you use "Tag" only those characters you list in your first post can reply. Those not listed cannot jump into the scene unless they first get permission from the person who created the topic.

OC: Means Original Character. You'll see this in the cast list and on the website next to a character's name. This are characters that are created by fans and not the author of the original series.

OOC: Out Of Character. (This is not used on this forum anywhere, but it’s still nice to know.)

BIC: Back In Character (Not the brand-name cigarette lighter)

IC: In Character.

RP or RPG: Role Play, or Role Play Game.

CANON: This is a word that means to play an already created and established character as they are written out to be by the author and creator of the literature/movie/or t.v. show.

SCENARIO/SCENE: A tag used as a summary to set up a location, time or place that the following posts will be taking place. Can also contain a brief summary of the scene's setup.

EXIT: Used for when a character is no longer in the scene or has moved on to another thread to continue their plotline.

END OF SCENARIO/SCENE: Used to let all the players know that the situation or plot point has been made and it is time to move on to other plot points to keep the role-play going.

CLOSED: Means that the role-play is finished or has enough players to carry out the plotlines, or is not open to new characters.

OPEN: Means that the role-play is open to any and all characters that fit in the timeline, plotline and world of the role-play.

GOD-MOD/GOD-MODING: Refers to characters without flaws or weaknesses. Characters that cannot die, be injuried or permanently disabled by weapons or attacks. These characters are often unrealistic and do not fit in most RP's.

MARY SUE/MICHAEL BLUE: Term often referring to characters that tend to be too moody and are often melodramatic or unrealistic.

SHIP: Refers to a relationship or pairing. This is more commonly used with Canon characters.

SLASH: Refers to a relationship of a homosexual nature. This kind of rp or character is not allowed on this forum.

LITERATE RP: A tag used to insist that all players use proper grammar and spelling when role-playing. Majority of these require you use the book format style for your posts.

ONE LINERS: Refers to short RP posts containing one or two sentences with very little dialouge or detail.

NON-SERIOUS/NS: Non-serious role-plays are generally plotless, pointless, and random. They are not strict in any sense and often are considered "satire" or a "spoof" type of role-play. These are fun to play and a great way to practice.

SEMI/SEMI OR SEMI-SERIOUS/SS: Semi-serious rps are not governed by an overall plot to the role-play. While they can be more detailed in character emotions and story events, these kind of role-plays often go in tangents and have characters that have no real reason to be there but are there.

SERIOUS/S: Serious rps ALWAYS have a pre-existing plotline for the entire role-play. Often the plot has a beginning, middle and end to them. The posts typically have indepth describtions of surroundings, thoughts, facial expressions, emotions and dialouge. All characters in these kind of role-plays have to have a reason to be in the story. And it's a reason that has to fit into the main plotline.

LURKING/LURKER: Refers to a non-player. Someone who only reads the role-play or observes it. Sometimes a lurker will comment on the role-play and the players abilities.

PUPPETEER/PUPPETEERING: Refers to when a player attempts to control the actions, reflexes and dialouge of another character. This practice is strongly frowned upon and in most RP's you will get thrown out or banned for doing this.
